Founded in the year 1971, the Uefa Europa League is a European football competition unionized by the European football governing body UEFA.

Formerly known as the uefa cup, the Uefa Europe league was started following the discontinuation of the inter cities fairs cup.

Though many confuse the UEFA Europa League with the Euro League, Eufa leagues, Uefa nations league, Uefa Europa conference league and the European league, UEL is the 2nd tier league of the European club football ranked after the grand football league known as the UEFA Champions league which is the European 1st  tier football competition and right above the 3rd tier European league known as the uefa Europa conference league.

Since the commencement of the league in 1971, the latter was known as the uefa cup winners cup but it was rebranded in 2009 due to change of the leagues patterns and formation.
