Lille Olympique Sporting club is a French professional football club based in Hauts-de-France.

Lille OSC was was formed in 1944 after a merger between sporting club Fivois and Olympique Lillois of ligue 1.

Due to world war 2, both teams became weak leading to the two teams being consolidated as 1.

Lille OSC won twice, the ligue 1 title within the first 10 years of the club existence and also attaining runners-up position 4 Times during that period.

In 1946, Lille OSC won their first ligue 1 title under the leadership of George Berry and then took another ligue1 title with Andre Cheuva as manager during 1953-1954 season.

Lille OSC also managed to win 6 Coupe de France title between the year 1946 to 1955.

Lille OSC was relegated to Ligue 2 for the first time during the 1955-1956 season.

Lille OSC has managed to become the ligue 2 champions for 4 times and due to lack of resources, Lille fc was perceived as an average team until the leaders like Max pommerolle came to rescue the club.

In 1998, Lille Osc was promoted to the French ligue 1 under coach Vahid Halilhodzic as the privatization of French football league occurred.

The club qualified for the UEFA Champions league during the 2000-01 season in their history for the first time.

The club then started to play at the Lille Metropole stadium after attaining the new status of playing in the UEFA Champions league.

In 2011, Lille Osc managed to win both the ligue 1 title and the coupe de France under the leadership of coach Rudi Garcia.

After being absent in the UEFA Champions league for a period of seven seasons, Lille fc managed to qualify after finishing runners-up in ligue 1 in 2019.

Lille has a long standing rivalry with Rc lens with whom they compete in a derby dubbed Derby du Nord.
